When to Launch

I’m frequently asked some version of the same question from commercial interior designers considering launching an independent practice:

“How did you know it was the right time to start?”

What I continue to share is this:

There is rarely a perfect moment.

Most people think they need:

  • a full pipeline,

  • a polished website,

  • a portfolio of independent projects,

  • a business plan,

  • or complete confidence before they begin.

In reality, most successful boutique practices start much smaller and much messier than people imagine.

Usually it begins with:

  • one trusted relationship,

  • one project,

  • a referral,

  • freelance work,

  • or simply the realization that the traditional firm structure no longer aligns with how they want to work.
